Why We Love It...
Luna is the Napa winery that basically launched John Kongsgaard’s career, along with several other notable Napa names. They proudly worked for years to popularize Italian varieties in California – and now, things have come full circle, with this fantastic Prosecco raised, reared, and rendered in the heart of Veneto! Luna happened to close its customer-facing winery doors in 2020, but the wine has kept flowing, thank goodness! With new, spectacular releases that run the gamut of Italian Pinot Grigio, Tuscan Sangiovese, and this delightful Prosecco from Veneto – Luna keeps hitting impressive marks.
Believe it or not, Sassicaia (you know, the first Italian wine to get 100 points from Robert Parker, and widely considered one of the greatest wines in Italy today) shares the same winemaker as our humble, budget-friendly bottle of Prosecco. Graziana Grassini is the revered oenologist at Sassicaia, plus a whole slew of other top brands – and she also makes this bubbly! She works with sustainably farmed Glera grapes here, with no spraying of pesticides, and they even use frogs for pest control in the vineyard (a new one for us, too)!
The end result? Beautiful bubbles and a thick, stable mousse that bursts and rolls in the glass – delivering aromas of honeysuckle, jasmine, peonies, and alyssum, like some ambrosial perfume of some ancient deity. And then, an explosion of fruits – green apple, apricot, tangerine, golden plums, crisp pears… oh, my! A finishing touch of heavy cream and honeyed almonds – plus the gentlest kiss of sweetness that is never cloying or forthcoming, just perfect. Graziana opted for a drier-than-average style of Prosecco – one with a Brut dosage level (nearly Extra Brut) that would more closely match the dryness of top-flight Champagne than typical Prosecco.
This is as dry a Prosecco as you'll find, with all the rich, fruity, floral characters you love. For the insurmountable price of only $14? House bubbles worthy, for certain! This is a Luna deal for the ages that we’re certainly stocking up on yet again – and simply the perfect opportunity to build out your stores for the upcoming sunny and warm months!
