Why We Love It...

Crémant de Bordeaux is still a rare creature in the USA, even as it is picking up popularity throughout Europe. At the superb price we have today… this is a bottle to add to your collection! In fact, why not add a few?

Even though Bordeaux has been crafting sparkling wines since the early 1800s, the region never received an official recognition as such until just 1990, when Crémant de Bordeaux became an official appellation of France. The region encompasses over 500 vineyards, and covers one of the largest geographical vineyard areas in all of France – and yet, production has always remained quite low. All that has changed in the past decade plus, as sparkling wines have grown in popularity to staggering new heights… so hurray to you, and us, as after two years, we finally have a re-stock of this treasured beauty! Let’s keep the bubbles-a-flowing!

The wine here is a blend of Merlot and Sémillon – both traditional grapes of the region, but nevertheless something rarely seen together in a cuvee. Like all crémants, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the traditional Champagne method over a period of 12 months, before a final Brut dosage. The resulting wine is quite delicious – fresh and dry, with amplified fruit characteristics and a stable mousse filled with energy and verve!

Pouring a golden flaxen wheat color, the bubbly exudes aromas of biscuits, while tropical mango, honeydew melon, and Meyer lemon take the lead in the juicy and fleshy mouth. Notes of lychee with hints of ginger and coriander develop on the unctuous and creamy finish, while a wet slate minerality rises and lingers as the fruit fades away. The finish is delightfully long, and the whole thing is somewhat surprisingly complex, given the price and youthfulness of the appellation! You won’t find this anywhere else in the country, folks… and we’re over the moon to finally have some in our grips once again after a long, two-year wait! Grab a handful while you still can!
