Why We Love It...

Anytime we can snag a stunning, 91 point Cremant d’Alsace Rosé at the best price in the USA – I’m feeling good. But after a glass of this – with the complexity, spiced orchard fruit profile, and the slow spread of warmth and joy throughout every fiber of my being…I am feeling simply grand!

The Meyer family has been growing grapes and making wines in Blienschwiller, Alsace – an ancient town built around an old Roman villa on the historic road of Piedmont des Vosges – since at least 1722. The domaine is named for Hubert, who took over for his father in 1976 and was the first in the family to sell bottled wines from their holdings. More recently, he gave control of his domaine over to his son, Pierre, back in 2009.

Like most Alsatian producers, their focus is on still wines, including a Grand Cru riesling from the revered Winzenberg vineyard. They make everything from pinot gris, riesling, pinot blanc, and gewurztraminer, alongside their two sparklings – a Blanc de Blancs and this 100% rosé of pinot noir.

The grapes are hand-harvested, from their best vineyard plots on richer and heavier clay soils particularly suited for Alsatian pinot noir. Since 2019, the vineyards have all achieved biodynamic certification – an effort that became a priority to the property ever since Pierre took over in 2009. The grapes are gently crushed to then undergo fermentation in neutral vessels. From there, aging on the lees for a full 20 months before disgorgement and a Brut level dosage of a mere 5 grams per liter.

The resulting enchantment is a pale pink, with a crunchy and effervescent mousse, and an elegant perlage of tiny, plentiful bubbles. The aromas and flavors are crisp and autumnal – with Red Delicious apples, spiced pears, fresh summer strawberries, and a floral sensation of almond and cherry blossoms. The mouth is dry, savory, and mineral – with accents that range from forest duff to blood orange, with an undercurrent of sanguine salinity. Just like the Blanc de Blancs, this is one amazingly complex wine for such a low price, and a worthy bottle to serve as both an aperitif and an accompaniment to heartier fare. You’re gonna want some of this for your all-time summer sipping and at the best price in the USA – you’d be wise to get a bunch!
