Why We Love It...

An Alsatian Cremant is already at the top of my list of all-time favorite bubbles, but make it a rosé and I just about keel over in joy. Being the bubble aficionados you are, you know that rosé bubbles are rather rare…and oftentimes very expensive! Fear not – with a depth of spiced orchard fruits and complex minerality, this is a bubbly fit for popping no matter the time of year, especially with 91 points and a modest $18 a bottle price…aka, the best price you’ll find in the States!

Like most Alsatian producers, the Meyer family’s focus is on still wines, including a Grand Cru riesling from the revered Winzenberg vineyard. They make everything from pinot gris, riesling, and pinot blanc to gewurztraminer, alongside their two sparklings – a Blanc de Blancs and this 100% rosé of pinot noir. They’ve been growing grapes and making wines in Blienschwiller, Alsace – an ancient town built around an old Roman villa on the historic road of Piedmont des Vosges – since at least 1722. The domaine is named for Hubert, who took over for his father in 1976 and was the first in the family to sell bottled wines from their holdings. More recently, he gave control of his domaine over to his son, Pierre, in 2009.

The grapes used for this stellar rosé sparkler come from their best vineyard plots on richer clay soils that are particularly suited for Alsatian pinot noir. They’ve been a biodynamic producer since 2019, and that push was spearheaded by Pierre from the time he took the helm. The grapes age on the lees for a full 20 months before disgorgement and then the wine is finished with a Brut level dosage of just 5 grams per liter.

The resulting wine is majestic, with a pale pink hue with a fine mousse. It’s the perfect wine to carry us all through summer and into fall as the aromas and flavors are crisp and soul-warming – with Red Delicious apples, fresh summer strawberries, spiced pears, and a marzipan and cherry blossom finish. The mouthfeel is dry, savory, and mineral, with accents that range from forest duff to blood orange, and an undercurrent of sanguine salinity. Many people like bubbles for things like lighter-style fare, but this has the backbone and composition to serve as both an aperitif as well as an accompaniment to heartier fare. Anytime we can snag a stunning, 91 point Cremant d’Alsace Rosé at the best price in the USA – I’m feeling good. But after a glass of this – I am feeling simply grand!
