Why We Love It...

Sparkling Grüner Veltliner? Yes… oh, yes! If this is your foray into the style, trust us… this Brut Grüner is ever-majestic, spicy, and bright with the grape’s naturally high acidity and rampant minerality. Coming from one of the most consistently excellent and impressive producers in Austria’s Pulkau region, this gem is now amazingly over $20 off retail!

These folks have one of the best, most consistent, fully experimental, yet completely rooted in tradition, portfolios we have found anywhere. Truth: I’ve never had a bad wine from them, and I’ve had more than a few completely spectacular ones over the years. This is most certainly the latter, especially for this killer price!

Pulkau is an ancient wine-growing region that has thrived in Austria for centuries. The Hiller-Jordan family has shared in this history since 1858, and have certainly made their own contributions to the region’s heightened reputation. Simone and Hannes – two of the coolest Austrian winemakers you’ll ever meet – originally made this cuvée for their wedding. Today, Simone leads the charge in their business as the 4th generation winemaker of the family, nurturing the young 5th generation already in the biz to secure the family’s success for the future.

The vineyards are rooted in the foothills of the Manhartsberg, where two climates collide on two distinct ancient soil types that go back 555 million years. At this site, the warmer, drier climate of the Weinviertel meets the harsh cooler climate of the Waldviertel – resulting in warmer, sunny days and bitingly cool nights throughout the growing season, all taking place on soils that combine volcanic granite, quartzite, and marble with eroded sandstone and loam. All in all, one of the most unique sites in Austria for growing grapes, all leading to one of the most pleasantly intriguing and complex Grüners you’ll ever taste!

Zippy green apples, sweet celery soda, orchid blossoms, kiwi, electric lemon Spree Candy, a juicy bite of ripe white nectarine…this is a picnic basket full of fruit, florals, and tang, and so exceptionally easy to love! The fruit joins an electric jolt of flint and slate-driven acidity, with some lively green notes of tarragon and lime zest, plus a kiss of lychee sweetness at the very last to wrap things up with a luxurious silkiness. Altogether, a bubbling, fresh, and absolutely boisterous mouthful of Austrian delight! We directly import these folks ourselves, so rest assured you won’t find this anywhere else in the good ol’ USA!

About the Producer

Hiller Winery, officially known as Weingut Jordan, is a family-owned estate located in Pulkau, within Austria's Weinviertel region. The winery is currently managed by fourth-generation winemaker Simone Hiller-Jordan and her husband, Hannes. The estate spans vineyards characterized by diverse soils, including Maissau granite and fine-grain loess, which contribute to the unique profiles of their wines. Specializing in Grüner Veltliner, the winery produces notable selections such as the "Simone I. Wine & Queen," a wine named in honor of Simone's tenure as Austria's Wine Queen. This particular Grüner Veltliner is celebrated for its lively aromas of rennet apple and nuts, complemented by a creamy texture and balanced acidity. In addition to their still wines, Weingut Jordan offers a Grüner Veltliner Brut Reserve, an elegant sparkling wine crafted using traditional bottle fermentation and aged for 18 months on the lees, resulting in fine mousseux and elegant yeast notes. The Hiller-Jordan family is committed to sustainable viticulture, emphasizing minimal intervention and environmental responsibility in their winemaking practices. Their dedication to quality and tradition has established Weingut Jordan as a respected name in Austrian winemaking.
