Why We Love It...

The Ginglinger-Fix family was one of our best discoveries in Alsace. We first met them years ago in France – and were immediately blown away by the quality across their entire portfolio. They focus on tiny batches of traditional Alsatian varieties – riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot gris, etc, and are rarely, if ever, exported to the U.S.! You Last Bubbles fans have gobbled up a few vintages of this beauty now, but this 2020 is all that and then some! If you’ve never had one before, then today is your lucky day…truly stunning quality and drinkability for a sparkler under $20!

Set amongst a fairytale backdrop – with the snow-capped Swiss Alps standing ominously above the Jura Mountains – you’ll find the good folks of Ginglinger-Fix. Their estate here in Alsace has been in the family's hands since 1831, with the family’s ties to the Alsatian wine biz extending all the way back to 1610! They have seemingly always farmed this 7.5-hectare plot – one that was derided as far back as 1771 by the local government surveyor as being unsuitable to farming…“The soil is so full of gravel and stones that it doesn’t give back the seed of the grains.” Maybe so for wheat and vegetables, but it makes ideal land for tending world-class vines, as long as you can find those willing to put in the work!

While the winery is best known internationally for its Grand Cru riesling and gewurztraminer, it was their stunningly crisp and layered crémant that first grabbed our attention. This bubbly is a blend of 37% pinot blanc (the locally favored auxerrois clone), 29% pinot gris, 17% pinot noir, and 17% chardonnay, entirely harvested in the 2020 vintage. Simply delicious – dry, crisp, delightful. All from high up amongst the clouds in the spectacular Alsatian hillsides. UBER-fresh and zesty, with dazzling aromas and flavors of white nectarine, crisp Bosc pears, lemon, pomelo, alyssum, dried apples, and fresh-made pastries, it’s super clean, racy, and tongue-tingling from the instant it passes your lips. Organic farming, with a biodynamic focus, makes this even more appealing – these are folks doing everything right, and not making you pay an arm and a leg to taste such fine quality!

The finish is dry, soft, and exceptionally creamy in the 2020 vintage, with a fine-boned acidity that carries this to an elegant close.  A simply perfect any-time sipper and one that will surely impress even the most challenging of guests! A stunning crémant that will be a stand-by in my house through summer and into fall, no question!
