Why We Love It...

We’ve long been admirers of the Ginglinger-Fix family in Alsace after meeting them a handful of years ago. Immediately, the quality of their entire portfolio blew us away, focusing on tiny batches of traditional Alsatian varieties like riesling, gewurztraminer, and pinot gris. Few of their wines ever get exported to the U.S., but this 2020 was one of the lucky few that made it overseas to our shiny warehouse, and goodness, are we thankful it did! A mere $20 for a supreme value and stunning quality here…don’t miss this!

Picture this…snow-capped Swiss Alps towering above the Jura Mountains, and just in the forefront of this awe-inspiring scene sits the lovely estate of Ginglinger-Fix. The property here in Alsace has been in the family's hands since 1831, with ties to the Alsatian wine biz extending all the way back to 1610! They’ve farmed this 7.5-hectare plot seemingly since time began – a plot that happened to be mocked as far back as 1771 by the local government surveyor for being unsuitable to farming: “The soil is so full of gravel and stones that it doesn’t give back the seed of the grains.” For wheat and vegetables, maybe, but this rocky terroir makes ideal land for tending world-class vines, as long as you can find those willing to put in the work!

While the winery is best known internationally for its Grand Cru riesling and gewurztraminer still wines, it was their stunningly crisp and layered crémant that first grabbed our attention. This bubbly is a blend of 37% pinot blanc (the locally favored auxerrois clone), 29% pinot gris, 17% pinot noir, and 17% chardonnay, entirely harvested in the 2020 vintage. Simply delicious, dry, crisp, and delightful – and all from high up amongst the clouds in the spectacular Alsatian hillsides. Incredibly fresh and zesty, with dazzling aromas and flavors of white nectarine, crisp Bosc pears, lemon, pomelo, alyssum, dried apples, and fresh-made pastries, it’s super clean, racy, and tongue-tingling from the instant it passes your lips.

Organic farming, with a biodynamic focus, makes this all the more appealing – these are folks doing everything right, and not making you pay an arm and a leg to taste such fine quality! The finish is dry, soft, and exceptionally creamy in the 2020 vintage, with a fine-boned acidity that carries this to an elegant close. A simply perfect anytime-sipper and one that will surely impress even the most particular of guests! A stunning crémant that will be a stand-by in my house through summer and into fall, no question!
