Why We Love It...

This is an estate that has been kept in the family for over 200 years, producing top notch Alsatian wines like riesling, pinot gris, gewürztraminer, and more. Now entrenched in the ninth consecutive generation of farmers and winemakers, the Bernhard philosophy has grown to fully embrace organic agriculture and winemaking… and the wines have never been better.

100% pinot noir from the family’s estate in the foothills of the dramatic Vosges Mountains, directly west of Colmar in the picturesque little burg of Katzenthal. Their cellars are original buildings crafted exclusively for winemaking and storage back in the 16th century! This delicate, spicy, and generous rosé bubbly is but a tiny portion of their portfolio but over-delivers in every possible way. Delicious, complex, with harmonious brightness and richness, plus a pleasing drink-me-up fruitiness throughout, this méthode champenoise wine is the perfect cellar-stocker.

Basically, everyone has loved this wine everywhere we’ve poured it, and yet it is also “serious” enough for the bubbly geeks to be happy about. 15 months on the lees and simply popping with buttery dough, strawberry, roses, red apples, minerals, and a wonderful, fine bubbly texture – really, it hits all the sweet spots. For this remarkable price? A silly 40% off?! Yes, please. You won’t find this anywhere else in the U.S…. we direct import them straight from Alsace (good excuse to visit, right)? This is something special, indeed.

About the Producer

Domaine Bernhard is a small, family-owned wine estate in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, directly west of Colmar in the little burg of Katzenthal. In 16th century buildings on an estate they purchased in 1802, the family creates provocative, even exemplary Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. From granite-based soils, these wines are crisp, clean, fruity and fragrant, and very well balanced with slightly lower alcohol levels (12- 13%) than their neighbors to the south. Beginning in 2012, all Bernhard wines are certified organic. Everything here is done to promote the life of the soil which is the root of expression for each terroir: regular plowing, grass in the vineyard, compost, maintenance of old-to-ancient vines, only the most detailed and precise attendance to viticulture. The 9th generation of the Bernhard family currently operates the estate.
