Why We Love It...
The Frey Family hails originally from Switzerland, but migrated over to Alsace in the early 20th century. They would eventually settle as farmers on the hillsides of Dambach-la-Ville in the central heart of Alsace, devoting themselves exclusively to viticulture. They bottled their first wines in 1963, and since 1997 they have engaged in organic and biodynamic farming. Now, with the third-generation vintners at the helm, they are continuing their evolution, and driving further to understand the link between themselves and their environment.
In 2010, they moved their production to an above-ground, bioclimatic cellar. The facility was built entirely with sustainable, natural materials, oriented over two natural springs to provide both biodynamic energy and the necessary moisture to keep their wooden vessels intact. Copper wires are implemented throughout to harness the energy, and the same principles of sacred architecture used in cathedrals around the world for centuries has guided every aesthetic choice. The effect is like something out of a science fiction film – at once primal, and mysteriously modern – invoking a wonder and awe. Here, their 20 hectares of vineyards provide fruit for their entire portfolio, to be sorted, fermented, aged, and bottled under a singular philosophy and methodology. They own five parcels across Alsace, with each providing its unique aspect, all centered around the imposing and mountainous Grand Cru of Frankenstein.
This Brut Nature uses pinot blanc, auxerrois, and riesling to craft this unique cuvee – golden and developed in color, yet zippy and fresh from the moment it leaves the bottle – and until the last drop is happily consumed. Aromas of lemon balm, golden apples, fresh-cut grass, and wildflower honey take shape in the glass, with hints of florals that are never overwhelming. The flavors that follow are laced with ground cherries, crumbled chalk, spiced pears, and sage. Matchsticks and plums too, with a well-integrated but consistently electric acidity that carries the wine into an impressive long finish – think more along the lines of a Wagnerian Opera than SNL weekend update. It’s delightfully serious Crémant – capable of sheer, drink-me-up pleasure, and able to withstand even the highest levels of scrutiny. I love it – easily one of the best Alsatian sparklers I’ve ever tasted. We’re pretty sure you will too… provided you get a move on!
