Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin was widowed at 27 after her husband, Francois Clicquot, passed away. Her husband had already passed on the secrets of Champagne to her, but after his untimely passing, she became an enterprising entrepreneur. Her resourceful innovations would change Champagne forever, earning her the nickname of “La Grande Dame,” or “a great lady.” Madame Clicquot was the first person to invent the riddling rack, or pupitre; the first to blend a rosé Champagne; and the first to age and craft a vintage bottling in 1810. This Veuve Clicquot Vintage Brut Rosé 2015 has all three noble Champagne varieties blended here, but the cuvée is pinot noir dominant, rounded out with 20% pinot meunier and 30% chardonnay. It pours a deep salmon hue that is absolutely delightful to look at and even more of a joy to the olfactory senses. With every sniff, the dazzling notes of blood orange, orange peel, wild strawberries, and wild cherries make their presence known. The fruitiness persists on the palate, but the profile is a bit different, touting fruit roll-ups and candied cherries and strawberries that are akin to Red Vines in flavor. These candy-like sensations don't take away from the merit of the wine, though, as it is a true delight and almost more whimsical due to these rich, exuberant flavors at play.
