Why We Love It...

The Dethune family is practically royalty, having held court in the tiny Grand Cru village of Ambonnay since 1610 as grape growers! They were and still are a pioneering family in Champagne. Though the house of Dethune as it looks today was founded in 1930, the lineage has dictated the know-how of its progeny. Today, Champagne Paul Dethune is led by Pierre Dethune, a pinot noir evangelist. He meticulously tends to the vines of all his fruit, and it shows with every cuvee released, including this one. This is a stellar tete de cuvee to add to your collection – and one of my personal favorites – and it should be in your cellar immediately.

This cuvee comes from Les Crayeres, a highly-regarded vineyard that needs to be on your radar. Like most vineyards in Ambonnay, it is planted to pinot noir. Here, in the hands of one of my favorite growers, this Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs is magical – and in a magnum, no less! Pierre Dethune crafts this from 1.5 hectares of pinot noir on Les Crayeres’ powerful, south-facing, chalky slope planted to 50+ year-old vines.

Dethune’s famous neighbors include that of legends like Egly-Ouriet and Billiot – producers who are known for their superb blanc de noirs. They farm organically and eschew chemicals in the vineyards and only embrace low-interventionist techniques such as integrated pest management, solar power, and a complete lack of chemical use in the vineyard.

The Les Crayeres Extra Brut 2015 is 100% pinot noir, which was aged in 205- liter Champagne barrels and bottled without filtration. It is rich yet zippy at the same time, since the dosage is only at 5 grams a liter. Of late, Champagne Paul Dethune has lowered their dosage levels to emphasize the purity of fruit that comes from the Ambonnay terroir. The lower dosage also emphasizes freshness that can be found in wines throughout the village, too.  It is spectacularly appetizing, with nearly 10 years of age on it. The aromas are intoxicating and complex, with honeysuckle, brioche, oysters and bruised apples. This wine is nearly as much fun to smell as it is to taste. On the palate, cherry saltwater taffy, strawberries, toasted almonds abound, powered by tension and minerality.

About the Producer

Champagne Paul Déthune embodies a rich winemaking legacy that dates back to 1610, with Pierre Déthune following in the footsteps of his father, Paul, and previous generations, including his great-grandfather Léon and grandfather Henri. Growing up in the vineyards of Ambonnay, Pierre learned the intricacies of viticulture alongside his father, fostering a deep connection to the land and its heritage. Together with his wife Sophie, he honors their ancestors' courage and dedication by carefully considering their choices for the future. This commitment to preserving their cultural heritage is evident in their work as independent winegrowers, as they strive to leave a lasting positive impact on their community and the environment.

Dedicated to sustainable development, Pierre and Sophie have a three prong approach to sustainability focusing on creating a safe and pleasant workplace for their employees, ensuring the financial stability of their operations, and minimizing their ecological footprint with organic farming practices, solar energy and rainwater recovery systems. Their estate, which produces a remarkable range of ten champagnes, is entirely Grand Cru, showcasing the unique terroir of Ambonnay. This meticulous attention to quality and respect for both people and nature results in champagnes that are celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and authenticity. By embracing their role as stewards of a timeless heritage, the Déthunes not only honor their family's history but also contribute to the evolution of sustainable winemaking practices in the Champagne region.
