Why We Love It...
Champagne Paul Berthelot has been family-owned and operated since 1884, but the domaine as it stands today dates back to the 1940s near Epernay, in the Premier and Grand Cru villages of Dizy, Avenay, and Aÿ. Here, Paul Berthelot’s holdings are spread across 16 hectares of vineyards – tended by five generations of vignerons beginning with Emile Berthelot. The wines have been a favorite of ours from the beginning – you can practically taste their handcrafted nature and gravitas.
The Eminence Brut Premier Cru cuvee is usually a blend of 70% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay, which makes a perfect blend to showcase both the full, round texture of the pinot noir and the acidity and minerality that come with chardonnay. Tasting Panel gave this wine a 95 – and for good reason. Flavors run the gamut, from peach to apricot, tangerine to lemon, with accents of wildflower honey, and an underriding vein of river rocks and chipped flint. Simply a perfect balance between ripe, fruity richness, and zippy, piquant minerality. It punches well above its weight in every capacity, offering the sort of complexity typically found in wines costing far more! Paul Berthelot should be your go-to for insanely great value in a Champagne – and a definite contender for house bubbles!
