Why We Love It...

Paul Berthelot continues to make masterpieces in the form of Champagne. This 96-point treasure, now half off, is another win to add to his rapidly growing roster. Tasting Panel’s praise-filled review said it “Drinks like a Champagne double the price” – and they’re talking about its retail value! We agree that the value is unmatched, the fine mousse and zingy freshness make this drink unlike anything we’ve ever tasted from Berthelot!

Domaine Berthelot dates back to the 1940s, in the village of Dizy, a few minutes north of Epernay. The Berthelot domaine has 16 hectares of vineyards between their home base in Dizy and nearby Avenay, which are both classified as Premier Cru, in addition to a few select holdings from down the road in Aÿ, a Grand Cru village. Pinot noir and chardonnay make up the vast majority of their holdings, planted in roughly equal parts across all of their vineyards.

This stunner is a glorious blend of Premier Cru fruit from Dizy, in the Vallee de Marne, clocking in at a classic 60/40 blend of pinot noir and chardonnay. Though it’s listed as a non-vintage, the base here is entirely from the 2017 vintage – a rather spectacular harvest season that is proving to be one of the greats among recent vintages. Luscious, electrifying Extra Brut that is rocking and rolling right now with a deft 4-gram dosage and nearly 4 years on the lees.

The wine leaps from the glass with aromas of honeydew melons and sourdough baguettes – and a palate that is mouth-filling and elegant with flavors of poached pear, Pink Lady apple, fresh red currant, yuzu, and an amazingly supple hint of luxurious toastiness that is uplifted with a minty, lemony freshness. We can’t get enough of the balance and the intensity in this wine…and have a feeling you’ll feel the same! This is a massively successful Extra Brut and simply worth every penny at our unparalleled price! You need to try it to believe – truly some of the best quality for value deals we’ve ever found in Champagne. Just a perfect Champagne to have on hand, at the ready, throughout this year and beyond! Shipping is on the house for 3 or more bottles, so fill your cart accordingly!

Paul was the hospitality director from 1940 to 2000, and Jacques was responsible of the organization of the vineyard and its development since 1960. Pinot noir and Chardonnay are the majority in roughly equal parts.
