Why We Love It...

By now, you all know I’m a true champion of underdog grapes. Meunier, the only other black grape outside of pinot noir in a sea of whites, has historically been used as a blender. But of late, it’s stepped into the spotlight with top billing, and consumers like you have seen just how incredible it does on its own. This Bel Instant Brut is a perfect example of why meunier is the Champagne grape to pay attention to.

The intention for this Bel Instant wine is to be both serious and irreverent at the same time. As mentioned, it’s 100% pinot meunier, with the grapes pulled from four separate parcels: Petites Greves, Plante Aux Choux, Mignonnes, and Beaux Chets. The vines range  from 10 to 60 years of age for this cuvee, and were harvested in 2019 and 2020. This Champagne was vinified in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats – and malo was blocked – for just under two years before it was disgorged, to create an indulgent Champagne fit for you super thirsty bubbleheads!

Set in the heart of the Marne Valley, in the sunny hillsides of the Essôme-sur-Marne commune, Champagne O. Belin (the “O” standing for Olivier) grows chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier to craft its exquisite and unique Champagnes. Winemaker, oenologist, and proprietor Olivier Belin calls this area his “natural playground,” pulling fruit from plots based on the characteristics of the terroir.

This Bel Instant has a pale rose hue that makes this look like a rosé, but it isn’t. This brut boasts a fine mousse, and it showcases rich flavors and freshness. The creamy, almost-melted texture of effervescence is so lush and enjoyable that I couldn’t stop myself from reaching for more again and again. Dancing on the nose are the intoxicating, complex aromas of peach rings, Rainier cherries, honeysuckle and roasted pineapple, along with stewed strawberries, apple tarts and nutmeg. A fun mineral component rounds out the end with a hint of iodine. All those fleshy, fruity, and zippy fruit flavors continue in the mouth, with hints of salty ocean air and a final flourish of charred grapefruit peel that leaves this too delectable to sip on your own. Meant to be enjoyed with good friends who appreciate good wine, this is a Champagne you can’t not buy! And, you’ll probably be one of the only one of your friends who has this stunning up-and-coming producer in your collection! Way to go, you, for being a first!

About the Producer

Olivier Belin is a fifth-generation independent winegrower based in the Marne Valley, in the bucolic town of Essômes-sur-Marne and Château-Thierry. Since 1997, he has passionately cultivated 8 hectares spread across 17 diverse plots, primarily focused on Meunier (60%), along with Chardonnay (30%) and Pinot Noir (10%). The vineyard benefits from varied soil types—silty-clay, clay-limestone, and sandy soils—and the vines range from 5 to 60 years old. Dedicated to sustainable viticulture, Belin follows the HVE (High Environmental Value) approach, alternating between grass cover and hoeing to nurture the land. His wines undergo vinification in small lots, emphasizing plot-by-plot distinctions. Notable cuvées include “Bel Instant,” dominated by Meunier, and the 100% Meunier “Belle de Saignée,” crafted from a plot planted by his grandfather in 1961. Each bottle reflects the unique terroir and Olivier's deep respect for his old vines, producing around 40,000 bottles annually.
