Why We Love It...
The Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger just might be Champagne’s most unequivocally revered site. Whether it is a $2000 unicorn bottle of Krug or a delicious bottle of Delamotte, Le Mesnil’s greatness is unmistakable. One of our favorite grower champagne houses, Michel Turgy, just so happens to have ALL six hectares of their vineyards located within Le Mesnil. For this vintage wine, they select the best fruit, from the oldest vines (30-60 years old) they farm…and let the remarkable site speak for itself.
For over 130 years, the Turgy family has been expressing the soul and substance of Mesnil – faithfully capturing the region’s unparalleled terroir. Peacefully lingering in the shadows of the larger houses in the Côte de Blancs, third-generation grower Jean-Michel Turgy is crafting unbelievable chardonnay-based wines on Le Mesnil’s famous chalk and limestone soils. After careful hand harvesting, the fruit is pressed in an ancient wooden upright Champagne press. The juice is then fermented on native yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks before secondary fermentation in the bottle. This Champagne has aged on the lees for 78 months – that's six and a half years – with zero dosage.
This Blanc de Blancs is refined and sophisticated. There are aromas of gardenias, lemon zest, and green apples that lead to a palate of toasted brioche, salted yellow plums, lemon curd, and quince paste. The wine showcases Le Mesnil’s characteristic chalkiness, as a bright vein of tingly, flinty mineral edges carries the abundant fruit into an exceptionally bright and spicy finish. Just an epic Champagne from start to finish. Fantastic stuff that is simply not to be missed
