Why We Love It...

It’s no secret that we cherish and adore family producers…no less when they’re celebrated Champagne grower-producers! Forest-Marié happens to be one of my all-time favorites and a consistent value-driven benchmark for quality Champagne. The young son of Thierry and Gracianne, Louis Forest, hatched this newest project, a Premier Cru Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut made from pinot meunier and pinot noir vineyards in Gracianne’s hometown, Écueil, passed down to Louis from his parents.

Located in the northern stretches of the Montagne de Reims, Écueil is a Premier Cru village where Louis owns twelve plots based mostly in two lieu dits. “Les Blanches Vignes” is a sandy vineyard planted with pinot noir back in 1970, and “Les Pins Blancs” is a loamy pinot meunier vineyard whose grapes were planted in 2006.

Split right down the middle, with half pinot meunier vinified in stainless steel and 10% acacia barrels and half pinot noir vinified in neutral Burgundy oak and new Cognac barrels, this extra brut Champagne hails predominantly from the 2016 vintage with some house reserve wine from past vintages to amp up the depth and complexities. It develops for over four and a half years on the lees prior to disgorgement and a perfectly judged final dosage of 3 g/L.

Out of the bottle, the wine pours a dreamy pale golden color with a sturdy and creamy mousse that holds up impressively. The aromas are fine, tiptoeing gracefully with warm brioche, caramel-y nougat, and whiffs of lemon zest that are amplified by notes of baked apple. Roasted almond and scrumptious cherries jubilee dance through the palate, along with more apple pie incarnations, a bit of preserved lemon, and faint spurts of honeyed dates. Ultimately, an ever so rich and expressive Champagne, with plenty of power and heft amplified by a prominent wave of acidity. A hoot of a wine to behold – and quite the exciting new chapter for the Forests. Sadly, only 215 cases of this cuvee were made, and we only have a handful of those remaining. This Last Bubbles Exclusive is the only home to these fine Champagnes in the entire USA – so for nearly 50% off retail and shipping on the house for 3+ bottles, I’d humbly suggest you make some of this yours!
