Why We Love It...
For seven generations, and over four centuries, the Legras family has grown grapes in Chouilly – a Grand Cru village in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. The 1967 meeting of François Legras and Brigitte Haas led to the creation of this house, and the nearly 37 hectares of fruit they farm – 18 in Chouilly, 12 in Vitry, and 6.5 in Les Riceys. Today, their three sons, Olivier, Rémi, and Jérôme manage the vineyards and the winery, creating dynamic and graceful cuvees that stand as enviable expressions of the best characteristics in the Côte des Blancs and beyond.
This vintage Blanc de Blancs is only made in outstanding vintages – but even more than that… the vintage must also be unique, as well as exceptional – providing something irreplaceable and beyond duplication of any year that came prior. In this way, the family can truly aim to capture a sense of the vintage, with all of these Millésime cuvees focusing exclusively on their estate-grown chardonnay from their homeland in Chouilly.
100% chardonnay, aged for 8 months in barrel before bottling and aging on the lees for a full six years prior to disgorgement in April of 2022. A Brut level dosage of 6 grams per liter was chosen to perfectly amplify the fruit profile, and soften the edges of this wine’s imposing frame. The wine opens with brioche, umeboshi, cherry blossoms, and brown butter aromas, followed by flavors of white peaches and Korean pears, wet slate, flint, and mandarin oranges. The structure is powerfully built and enduring, with a cool, crunchy bite that lingers on the extended finish. This is a brawny and masculine-style of Champagne, with a heady intensity to hold up to heavier, well-marbled cuts of meat and game. It’s simply fantastic wine that is well-deserving of its impressive 97 point score. We didn’t get much but for those looking to expand their tastes to a great new house (I’m assuming that’s all of us, right?) I’d suggest grabbing a bottle…quick!
