Why We Love It...

You can’t find this rare creature anywhere else in the USA, and y’all know how we love to be your exclusive source of top-notch Champagne! On top of that, one sip and you’ll understand why this spectacular wine serves as the flagship of the Legras & Haas portfolio. This single vineyard parcel, on the westernmost edge of Chouilly, sits right alongside the vineyards of Epernay. For years, the fruit here consistently outperformed all other plots in the portfolio – meriting its own bottling – as well as aging of the vin clair in a portion of new, medium toast French oak barrels. The complexity is evident in every sip…this is undoubtedly one of our top new finds for rare and collectible Grower Champagne!

For seven generations, and over four centuries, the Legras family has grown grapes in Chouilly – a Grand Cru village in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. The 1967 meeting of François Legras and Brigitte Haas led to the creation of this house, and the nearly 37 hectares of fruit they farm – 18 in Chouilly, 12 in Vitry, and 6.5 in Les Riceys. Today, their three sons, Olivier, Rémi, and Jérôme manage the vineyards and the winery, creating dynamic and graceful cuvees that stand as enviable expressions of the best characteristics in the Côte des Blancs and beyond.

The exuberant mousse carries the first sensations right to your nose, with a frangipane tart sensation, and a floral lily and pickled plum character. As it settles, round aromas redolent of brown butter, summer stone fruits, Maui Gold pineapple, and mom’s apple pie take root – with a background flurry of spices and fresh from the garden herbs. In the mouth, apricots and white cherries carry the fruit profile, with gingersnap cookies, and toasted almond notes. The finish is stony and fresh, with a clean river rock character, and a long vein of lemon and orange-driven citrine acidity. Just remarkable from opening sniff to the very last, long and lingering sip – this is a bottle you don’t want to end.

This 100% chardonnay is grown on a furrowed ridge (that’s what Les Sillons means) in a parcel known as Les Partelaines. Even though Chouilly is the northernmost Grand Cru village in the Côte des Blancs, the style here is often riper and more tropical than that of Le Mesnil or Avize – oft finding comparisons to Cramant. This fits with that notion, and a remarkably friendly, luscious, and opulent wine is the happy result. This is the current release, and definitely ready to drink – yet built to evolve over the next decade, easily. If you’re on the hunt for a new special occasion Champagne…you’d do well to give this a serious look. Serious pedigree that still carries a relative value when held up to its peers.
