Why We Love It...

We’ve featured this fantastic cuvee once before, several months back, and you took down every last case in the USA! We immediately went back to the source and begged for more...and guess what has just arrived, fresh from Champagne?! 97 points and ready to delight yet again!

Goulin-Roualet is a small father/daughter operation based in Sacy – a small Premier Cru village a couple of miles south of Reims, contained within the northern reaches of the Montagne de Reims. Marine essentially runs the day-to-day winemaking at this point, but her father, Christophe, is never far away and always willing to lend a hand. The facility is small, yet efficient, with just enough tanks, vats, and barrels to make the whole of their 11 cuvee portfolio – most of which scarcely grow above 150 cases in total production. Pinot noir, pinot meunier, and chardonnay from the Premier Cru village of Sacy are the family’s bread and butter and are represented in equal amounts in this stunning wine. The vines grow on limestone soils, revered for their water-retaining capacities, but also adding the highly coveted texture of minerality to this wine.

The base blend relies on the 2019 vintage, with all the fruit fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation before blending and aging on the lees in bottle for an additional three years. A finishing dosage of 6.25 grams per liter gives this plenty of plump and plush roundness – allowing this “golden cuvee” to shine with ample richness and depth.

The golden-hued wine explodes out of the glass with red cherries and golden plums, with a bouquet of medicinal wild herbs – from lemon verbena to chamomile, and pineapple sage – all brought together by a floral nuttiness reminiscent of fresh marzipan. A light oxidative note gives a perfumed depth to the fruity core and brings out mineral elements of iron and chipped flint on the long and resonating finish. We did everything we could to snag every last bubble that arrived on these shores – and now the chance is yours for the taking! 97-point Champagnes don’t come around every day… especially at this kind of price!

About the Producer

Marriage of heart and land, Goulin-Roualet champagne results from the union of Mr. Goulin and Miss Roualet, as well as their respective family vineyards. The house is based on three generations of viticulture. The estate includes the three Champagne grape varieties for a greater diversity of our cuvées, mainly in the town of Sacy and the two surrounding villages as well as a plot at "Mont-Benoît" in Villers-aux-Nœuds. The mostly limestone subsoil, the harsh climate and the relief create specific combinations for each of our plots and give our champagne wines their typicality. They vinify and age their wines in vats and barrels to develop a more complex palette of aromas.
