Why We Love It...

Who wouldn’t want to have in their cellar a cuvée from the oldest house in Champagne? I certainly do – and I KNOW you all do too. It’s like collecting a piece of history whose wine still tastes exactly as the founders intended to this day! That’s really saying something! I have no doubt that you’re going to drink this right up. It’s always a staple in my wine collection – and after you taste it, I’m sure it’s going to be a staple in yours.

Gosset is the oldest house in all of Champagne! The house was founded in Aÿ back in 1584, with generations of the Gosset family working the land and crafting the wines in the cellar up until 1993 when the family sold it to the Renaud-Cointreau family. Despite numerous offers, the Gosset family chose specifically not to sell to a large ownership group or corporate wine mogul, selecting instead another long-standing, local wine-focused family to preserve the over 400 years of style, elegance, and family tradition that has made Gosset a standard bearer of the great houses of Champagne.

The quality continues to be upheld, and this 2015 Grand Millésime Brut is Quality Incarnate. Leading with aromas of salted cherries, pomegranate, black tea, and peonies, this is intense and broad on the initial attack, as raspberry, cherry cola, and red apples wash over the palate, with accents of flint and chalk, pink peppercorns, and cinnamon red hots. Power is the name of the game to begin with, but laser-like precision and concentration bends this into a singularly focused wine that finishes with unbound finesse. Cool stuff, to be certain, especially at this price!

To maintain freshness and intensity, the team at Gosset completely blocks malolactic fermentation on this blend of 59% pinot noir and 41% chardonnay, and then allows aging on the lees for nearly six years to provide the richness and balance. The fruit is sourced from mostly Grand and Premier Cru sites, including Ambonnay, Avenay, Avize, Bisseuil, Chavot, Cramant, Moussy, Noé les Mallets, Pierry, Trépail, Verzy, and Villers Marmery. This is only the third time in this cuvees history that the blend has been dominated by pinot noir, and it shows. Rich, powerful, and with a lengthy finish – this is a wine that is built to last, yet guarantees to impress – even now! We grabbed a handful of cases, but only 200 were ever imported to the USA, so don’t miss out on this!

About the Producer

Gosset was started in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset and is the oldest house in Champagne. Gosset sources fruit almost entirely from premier cru and grand cru vineyards. Stylistically, they create wines without maolatic fermention but rather use the lees to express the wines terrior and to bring roundness and complexity. Gosset wines spend a mininum of 4 years on their lees in the cellar with their top cuvées seeing 10 years plus. The house has been awarded with the 'Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant' as well as the Trophy of French Excellence.
