Why We Love It...

Over 400 years of excellence…Gosset. Any family business that survives for centuries is deserving of praise, but when they just happen to fashion some of the best Champagne out there, well, that's what gets us all fired up for this incredible bottling! 2002 vintage, over 10 years on the lees, nearly another decade in bottle, this is unbelievably special bubbly at the best price in the entire USA!

Champagne Gosset was founded in Aÿ back in 1584, my friends. Generations of the Gosset family worked the land and crafted wines in the cellar, up until 1993, when the family sold to the Renaud-Cointreau family. Despite numerous offers, the Gosset family chose specifically not to sell to a large ownership group or corporate wine mogul, selecting instead another long-standing, local wine-focused family to preserve the over 400 years of style, elegance, and family tradition that has made Gosset a standard bearer of the great houses of Champagne.

This exceptional tête de cuvée is sourced from some of the greatest sites in Champagne, with traditional, long-held plots in Aÿ complemented with selections from Grand Cru plots in Bouzy, Verzy, Chouilly, Cramant, and a few chosen premier cru sites. The epic 2002 vintage, considered to be one of the greatest in the century thus far, and Champagne’s best since the iconic 1996 vintage, is on full display, with fully ripe fruit flavors balanced with impeccable structure and lasting acidity. This is one for the ages!

A blend of 52% chardonnay and 48% pinot noir, this 21 years young Champagne is a pristine, monumental achievement of a wine, drinking in its prime. The wine spends over 10 years on the lees, and Gosset prohibits any malolactic fermentation, maintaining the fruit's natural acidity to ensure the wine stays fresh and bright throughout the prolonged aging. The aromas are refined and mature, showcasing tropical fruits, with hints of lime, creamy pears, and salted toffee. Apples, apricots, and plums abound on the palate, with cool herbs like spearmint and chervil, and unctuous sensations of lemon marmalade carrying the wine to a rich and lasting finish. Sensational history, from an all-time great vintage, perfectly aged – this wine has everything going for it. 96 points attests to that! This is a wine to savor, and an experience to share with carefully chosen company. I’ve got one on deck for pre-New Year’s Eve…before all the riff-raff (most of whom I love dearly!) show up!

Cheers!

About the Producer

Gosset was started in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset and is the oldest house in Champagne. Gosset sources fruit almost entirely from premier cru and grand cru vineyards. Stylistically, they create wines without maolatic fermention but rather use the lees to express the wines terrior and to bring roundness and complexity. Gosset wines spend a mininum of 4 years on their lees in the cellar with their top cuvées seeing 10 years plus. The house has been awarded with the 'Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant' as well as the Trophy of French Excellence.
