Why We Love It...
The Orban story truly begins back in 1929 when Léopold Orban stopped selling his grapes to larger houses in Epernay and started producing Champagnes of his own. This made him one of the very first grower-producers in his village – and the beginning of a family-run house that continues today. Now, four generations later, Francis Orban has taken over the family business with 18 acres of vineyards in the Marne, on the sandy, clay-rich soils around the villages of Leuvrigny and Sainte-Gemme.
For this tiny-production, single-parcel cuvee, we’re looking at all 2015 vintage fruit and a total production of only 1500 bottles…which is only 125 cases! These old vines produce an almost surreal depth of flavor and spice, creating a complex, utterly vinous style that showcases the power and backbone of the pinot meunier grape. Vinification is in used Champagne barrels of multiple sizes, without any introduction of malolactic fermentation. No added body or additional flavor is needed, as the over 6 years aging on the lees grants even further depth, and a light dosage of only 3 g/liter adds the final touch to this extraordinary cuvee.
The aromas are seductively rich and ripe, with croissant dough, toasted brioche, mandarin blossom, and peaches leading the way. The wine enters the mouth in an extroverted, opulent way – only to be spread wide with everything from cherries to quince, to candied oranges, and vanilla chantilly cream. A light and nutty almond paste brings in the finish, with some earthy mineral elements that linger on the tongue long after every drop has been absorbed. This is elegant, intriguing, and all-in-all compelling Grower Champagne of the highest order! Not much to go around, so be sure not to miss out on this!
