Why We Love It...
Grape growers since 1629, the Moussé family finally began making their own Champagne in 1923, led by Eugène Moussé. The family started their growing journey in Saint Eugène, but moved to the tiny commune of Cuisles, along the right bank of the Marne River, in 1880, where they’ve remained ever since. Eugène and his son, Edmond, were both arrested and placed in work camps during World War II, and the elder Moussé sadly lost his life to Typhus in a concentration camp in 1945. His wife, Suzanne, kept their farm running, and after the war ended, Edmond trained with several winemakers in the Marne Valley to ultimately take over his father’s legacy with a renewed vigor and appreciation for life.
Today, Eugène’s great-grandson, Cédric (who was also the mayor of Cuisles for 25 years), runs the winery as the fourth-generation winemaker. He has made exemplary breakthroughs for the winery in the name of sustainability, installing solar panels, utilizing geothermal energy, allowing livestock to roam the vines and turn the soil, and eliminating synthetic pesticides, among other improvements. He also changed the name from Champagne Moussé Fils (sons) to Champagne Famille Moussé after his sister joined the business. The village of Cuisles is known for its unique, thick band of green clay that lies beneath sand and other soil types, giving the Pinot Meunier grown here a somewhat Chardonnay-esque mineral quality, with exceptional lift and texture.
The Moussé family’s steadfast dedication to their land, alongside the careful improvements to their processes, has been nothing short of magnificent for their already-impressive portfolio. This incredible 100th anniversary bottling showcases just how much care and effort is entwined into their work, and we’re simply blown away! Based on the amazing and warm 2020 vintage, it’s aged for 24 months on the lees and finished with a whispering dosage of 1 gram per liter. Upon first pour, the nose has so much going on – apple skin, dried earth, walnuts still wet after getting plucked from an ice cream sundae, and salty parmesan rind. The palate continues this rich and borderline-savory ride, but with some brighter orchard fruits of apple and quince thrown into the mix. The bubbles are extremely fine, with a gentle mousse that’s super well integrated and vinous. Such a lovely, unique bottle from a storied family of fervent winemakers and growers centuries over! Let this add some serious dimension, intrigue, and history to your collection today!
