Why We Love It...

We all but instantly sold out of our 750mL bottles of this – but, thank heavens, we have about 10 cases of MAGNUMS here to save the day! Billecart-Salmon is without question one of the all-time great Champagnes. Sure, they’re a big house, but they grew to such heights for good reason…200 years of innovation and quality, and working with some of the best fruit anywhere in Champagne. This glorious 2013 release of their vintage Extra Brut Champagne is another winner – a reminder of precisely why the 2013 vintage continually reaps its legendary status as one of the best vintages for Champagne in recent memory (even surpassing the iconic 2008 vintage in the minds of some critics)! This is THE Champagne to pop at your next celebratory event or dinner party!

The great house of Billecart-Salmon is a family-run empire that has thrived for seven generations, over two centuries, in the heart of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. They own 100 hectares of their own grapes and contract out with some of Champagne’s greatest growers for another 300 hectares – all spread across sites throughout the Champagne region. Their vintage cuvees get the choice picks of the top lots – mostly Grand Cru and Premier Cru fruit from the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne. In 1958, quality was top of mind for the Billecarts, and Charles Roland Billecart took a page from the brewers’ book to do a long fermentation at low temps and then a cold settle in the tank. This preserves the freshness in the wine that Billecart-Salmon is known for.  Now, seven generations hence, Billecart-Salmon  is revered and admired the world over, continually crafting excellent cuvees with every passing year – that includes this one.

This 2013 cuvee is based on 62% pinot noir, 24% chardonnay, and 14% pinot meunier – with 85% of the fruit hailing from Grand Cru and Premier Cru parcels. The wine has developed incredible complexity over the 89 months spent aging on the lees, and a deft 3 grams per liter dosage has amplified this offering impressively. The freshness and linear minerality of the 2013 are evident here – and make this a prime candidate for added development over the next decade.

The wine opens toasty and powerful, with an iron ore aroma and crushed rock intensity. In the mouth, cherries, raspberries, and myriad orchard fruits wash over the tongue, revealing layer after layer of intensely powerful fruit, harnessed by equally impressive acidity and structure. This lingers on the palate like a $200+ bottle of Napa cab, and will likely age for every bit as long.  (For the uninitiated, magnums are better for longer aging potential and this beauty has easily another decade left!) It’s all class and pedigree – and wholly worthy of the designation as one of the greatest Vintage Extra Bruts in Billecart-Salmon’s illustrious history. This wine just pumps on all levels! OK, you know you want it…but the answer now is how many? If you have any sort of occasion on the horizon, near or far, this is the bottle you’ll be grateful you locked down!

About the Producer

The champagnes of Maison Billecart-Salmon are above all created thanks to the knowledge of the men who rigorously cultivate an estate of 100 hectares, obtaining grapes from an area totalling 300 hectares across 40 crus of the Champagne region. The majority of the grapes used for vinification come from a radius of 20km around Epernay, where the Grand Crus of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay co-exist, in the ethereal vineyards of the Montagne de Reims, the Valle de la Marne and the Cote des Blancs.
