Why We Love It...

Pinot noir from the Côte des Bar is increasingly becoming one of those phrases that sends a tingle down our spine. Consistently, almost surprisingly, Champagne of this sort, from this region, has crept up our list to become one of the great values to be had in modern Champagne. This stunning Extra Brut from Maison Baudry is no exception – quality, grower Champagne like this for under $35 is a revelation! Y’all cleared our warehouse when we featured this a ways back, but guess who’s back in stock! Happy day!

Armel and José Baudry are brothers, running a 20 hectare vineyard in the southernmost reaches of Champagne, and serving as the 11th generation of their family to do so. Their principle focus carries on a long-standing family philosophy: healthy grapes grown with a focus on high quality, through use of ecologically sustainable methods – helps to preserve the environment of their site, as well as the vineyard’s health, all the while allowing them to craft unique and exceptional Champagnes.

Done and done. Made from 100% pinot noir, this Champagne showcases beautiful freshness and a casual finesse. Grown on the region's Kimmeridgian soils (the same found in Chablis) and dating back to the Jurassic age, the vineyards span the hillsides and valleys across the region in a mosaic of different plots and different exposures. This complexity is embraced by the brothers, with single lots carefully vinified and then blended together to create a complex and nuanced wine. The Extra Brut level dosage keeps everything percolating and bright, and the three years spent on the lees allow for integration and harmony.

The wine pours out a pale yellow, with a delicate mousse and plenty of orchard fruit aromas. Sensations of white peach, and d’Anjou pears, with notes of Granny Smith apples gets things started, quickly joined by notes of fennel and Thai basil, and honey-kissed raspberries. There is a vein of crunchy minerals running through the wine, yet the overall effect is juicy and plump, and mouth coating. Lots of fun to be had here, and at this price – this is a front runner for my “house Champagne 2023 sweepstakes"! We’ve offered this once before, a few months back, and the praise keeps trickling in… I’m refilling my cache and you should too!
