Why We Love It...

This Cuvée Préstige comes from a fourth generation winemaker in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy who is quietly but certainly turning many heads in the Champagne world. Bouzy is home to a few iconic names you may know – Paul Bara, Pierre Paillard, the Clouets, and the Vesselles, to name a few – and Alexandre Colson absolutely lives up to its prestigious neighborly comrades. The complex, powerful, and aromatic Champagne is synonymous with bottlings that push high into the triple-digits, easily, yet we’ve got some for well under $70 with free shipping on orders of 2 or more bottles!

Placed in the quaint, Grand Cru village of Bouzy, Domaine Alexandre Colson is one of the premiere Champagne producers in the area, dedicated wholly to quality, tradition, and craftsmanship. They farm all three classic Champagne grape varieties – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier – and are considered one of the highly distinguished micro-producers within the Montagne de Reims.

Alexandre took over the operation in 1989 and is the fourth generation of his family to grow grapes and make wine, overseeing a precious 3.70 hectares of land made up of 29 plots across the Grand Cru villages of Bouzy and Ambonnay. In 2020, he received a High Environmental Value certification as a testament of the environmental consciousness he and his production team pour into their winemaking processes. Following in his father’s footsteps, Alexandre is first a farmer, aiming to honor nature in his work and maintaining a flexible mindset around shifting weather and unpredictable harvests year to year – seeing the variations in yearly production as a gift to each vintage’s individuality rather than a hurdle to be fought against.

And this Brut Champagne speaks volumes about the pure magic that comes from such passion, heritage, and tenacity. It pours a wondrous straw gold color, with deep gold edges, as aromas of butterscotch, orange candies, and raw almonds whirl and twirl their way from the glass. The mightily complex and delightful flavors run the gamut of buttered sourdough toast, golden apples, Japanese plums, Eureka lemons, kaffir limes, crumbled chalk, and Bartlett pears. It is a medium weight wine, with a finish that is warm and spicy and a seductive acidity that is simultaneously soft yet persistent. We melt when we get our hands on bottles like this (Grand Cru, artisanal, grower micro-production) – and only wish we had way more to go around! For the considerable quality here, this is a stunning value! Get your hands on 2, at least, to snag free shipping, but if you’d ask us, a 6-pack or more is highly warranted and will age beautifully!

About the Producer

Champagne Alexandre Colson is a second-generation producer rooted in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, with a legacy that begins with Alexandre's great-grandfather, Adolphe Colson, who first planted the family's plots. Over time, the family transitioned from selling grapes to large négociants to producing their own champagne, a vision realized by Alexandre's father, Raymond. Today, Alexandre oversees 3.70 hectares of vineyards across 29 parcels in the prestigious Grand Cru villages of Bouzy and Ambonnay. The estate’s dedication to sustainable viticulture was solidified in 2020 with the achievement of Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification, reflecting its environmental stewardship and commitment to excellence.
