Why We Love It...
Placed in the quaint, Grand Cru village of Bouzy, Domaine Alexandre Colson is one of the premiere Champagne producers in the area, dedicated wholly to quality, tradition, and craftsmanship. They farm all three classic Champagne grape varieties – pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot meunier – and are considered one of the highly distinguished micro-producers within the Montagne de Reims.
Composed of 80% pinot noir and 20% chardonnay – with 40% pulled from the 2017 vintage, 40% from 2018, and 20% from 2019 – this “Carte d'Or” (“golden card”) is pure, rich, full-bodied Bouzy power in all its glory. This is a wine crafted in classic Bouzy intensity, with unmatched depth, structure, and complexity. It is an altogether rare and compelling Champagne with some of the most impressive structure I’ve ever encountered, without the customary sky-high price tag wines of this caliber often require.
Unfolding with floral and stone-fruit aromas of jasmine, wisteria, and peaches, with hints of acacia and lemon balm, the initial impression is one of grace and layered generosity. The mouth is full and rich, with golden plums, honeydew melons, orange cream, Rainier cherries, and red d’Anjou pears. The mousse is velvety and persistent, with an iron ore minerality on the finish. Powerful yet pleasant, with a softness that makes these incredibly complex wines downright approachable! We have a feeling this is going to become a staple Last Bubbles favorite…it’s certainly earned that position already among our office staff of die-hard bubble monsters! Make sure you snap up this Bouzy bubbly – that is, while we have it!
