Why We Love It...

We featured the previous disgorgement of this long-time Alsatian favorite about 10 months ago, but the newest release just arrived and oh my – is it ever good! Spring just isn’t the same without these delightful bubbles! From a 16th-century estate just west of Colmar, this Alsatian bubbly is a massive over-performer at $18. We are the only place in the USA to even HAVE this terrific value (we direct-imported this – you’d pay closer to $30 normally…). Full méthode champenoise style wine, with brightness, richness, and a pleasing fruitiness throughout, this flat-out rocks! Estate-grown, bone-dry, Alsatian Cremant under $20 is righteously rare enough…and – sad to say – we got less than in years past!

Frederick Bernhard is the 9th generation winemaker who has been farming 27 acres of prime land that has been in the family for over 200 years. This gem of a Cremant offers so much sparkling personality and quaffing pleasure that you should make sure to have a case on hand at all times.

Cremant d'Alsace is the second most consumed sparkling wine in all of France, after Champagne, of course. Accounting for nearly 25% of Alsace’s total wine production, with many of the same rigged production standards of Champagne…this is a region to explore for all lovers of finely-tuned bubbly.

This tasty treat is a blend of 40% chardonnay, 35% pinot blanc, 25% riesling, all organically grown, with a light 6 g/l dosage. The wine opens jubilantly with lemon balm, spearmint, and sage, followed by a rich complement of buttered toast. In the mouth, sweet and tart fruits toggle back and forth, with juicy pineapple, tart pomelo, fragrant Meyer lemon, succulent red cherries, exotic key lime, and some plump nectarines. Spice notes accent the bountiful fruit – with bits of clove, mace, and even a sort of allspice dram giving this a deeply warming sensation that settles in the belly comfortably. A bright, fresh acidity keeps this lingering into a long, focused finish that is both pleasing and intriguing in equal measure – and all at an utterly fantastic price! From one of the most picturesque, absolute bucket-list material wine destinations…Alsace is an all-time favorite. Until we get back there for real, this beauty serves up all the feels – onion tarts, cobblestone streets, dramatic mountainscapes, delectable cheeses – take me back!

About the Producer

Domaine Bernhard is a small, family-owned wine estate in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, directly west of Colmar in the little burg of Katzenthal. In 16th century buildings on an estate they purchased in 1802, the family creates provocative, even exemplary Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. From granite-based soils, these wines are crisp, clean, fruity and fragrant, and very well balanced with slightly lower alcohol levels (12- 13%) than their neighbors to the south. Beginning in 2012, all Bernhard wines are certified organic. Everything here is done to promote the life of the soil which is the root of expression for each terroir: regular plowing, grass in the vineyard, compost, maintenance of old-to-ancient vines, only the most detailed and precise attendance to viticulture. The 9th generation of the Bernhard family currently operates the estate.
