champagne-piper-heidsieck-rose-cuvee-rare-brut-2014
Champagne Piper-Heidsieck Rosé Cuvée Rare Brut 2014

In 1985, Piper-Heidsieck officially launched the first Rare Champagne, produced from the 1976 vintage, with the bottle's ornamentation designed by the Parisian jewelers Van Cleef & Arpels – cementing an association with the world of haute joaillerie that the brand still leans on today. Rare is distinguished by being an ultra-prestige cuvée released only in exceptional years, with only about 11 vintages declared over roughly 40 years, all in limited production.

Its name comes from the wine's reputation for being scarce and extraordinary, though you'll sometimes see it tied to a romantic (and somewhat embellished) story about a shipwrecked 1907 Champagne shipment recovered from the Baltic. Rare Champagne became its own brand in September 2018, having previously been labelled, marketed, and sold under the Piper-Heidsieck name, and is now managed and labelled independently (although it’s still made in the same facility as Piper-Heidsieck).

The “art of the blend” has made Piper-Heidsieck – and now Rare, too – one of the most consistently excellent producers of Champagne in the world, taking top-notch fruit and making it shine. The house has vast holdings of its own, in precious plots from the Montagne de Reims down to the Côte des Bar, while also purchasing fruit from top growers across the whole of the region. For this top cuvée – which was harvested in 2014, when the brand was still under the Piper-Heidsieck name – the blend takes 60% Chardonnay, and 40% Pinot Noir mostly from Montagne de Reims, 12% of which is still red wine from Les Riceys to add color.

For the 2014 expression of only the fourth vintage of this generous Rare Rosé, the wine spends a generous 96 months on the lees, with a perfectly balanced Brut dosage. This vintage is refined and concentrated – with a mouthwatering acidity that maintains a sublime freshness even 12 years later and carries all into an impressively lengthy finish. The initial aromas are fruity and floral, with a warm and encompassing balsamic quality, uplifted by accents of candied lemon, star anise, and wet stones. The attack on the palate is broad, and energetic, with a black cherry, strawberry, and red rose core – accented by preserved orange, mocha, wild honey, blanched almonds, and a sea-air and oyster salty freshness. Weight, and even deeper complexity and richness, build over time, with layer after layer of added flavors and textures unfolding like flower petals on a warm spring day. If only we had more than two cases left – I would surely love to see where multiple bottles of this go over the years to come. But alas, this Rare Rosé is destined to live up to its name… make some yours while it lasts!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0796/1211/7307/files/unnamed_1_122dfb54-a7a2-4bae-80f2-5f67f87432d4.jpg?v=1766091074
