Why We Love It...

In the majestic village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger next to the likes of Salon and Krug sits Champagne Philippe Gonet. The Gonets farm 20 hectares of vines, divided into 45 plots, over 13 micro-terroirs of Le Mesnil including a plot of old vines planted in 1929! On top of these family holdings in the Côte des Blancs, they source from a few distinguished parcels in the Montagne de Reims, the Marne Valley, and the Côte de Sézanne to put together this epic snapshot of delectable bubbly. At just over $30 each – this is a Champagne that wildly over-delivers…and we have it for over $32 less than the next best price in the USA! This is one fabulous bubbly, and trust me, you need it in your life!

I know I sound a bit hyperbolic, but the hyperbole is well warranted. I love practically any Champagne from the Côte des Blancs area. But I especially love zippy and mineral-laden, linear Champagnes with a laser focus and a purity of fruit character, like this one. This Grande Reserve Brut can be whatever you want it to be; it’s a delightful and quaffable summer sipper as well as a serious wine aficionado’s Champagne.

With 7 grams of sugar and a 60-30-10 (pinot noir, chardonnay, and meunier, respectively) blend, this wine is as easy drinking and as serious as they come. The base vintage is 2019, with 30% reserve wine from previous vintages blended in, and 20 months on the lees for that unmistakable toasty and yeasty flavor that gives Champagne its richness that we love so much.

This Champagne rocks – and I don’t just mean the limestone-rich, fossilized seashell rocks, either. It’s just so good. The flinty minerality is threaded through the wine, giving it an excellent backbone and a delicious layer of complexity. The flavors of orange, green apple, and Korean pear abound, with a sweet doughy flavor, reminiscent of shortbread cookies.  In a word, delectable. Now, if that price doesn’t make you want some of this, then this delicious description should. Can’t wait to hear what you think of this Grande Reserve. I have a sneaking suspicion that you’ll be crawling back, begging for more. No promises, but as ever, we’ll see what we can do!
