Why We Love It...
Like Odysseus of old, Olivier and his stepson, Ferdinand Ruelle, are planning to set off on a journey… through the 319 villages in the Champagne appellation. They’re still just getting this journey underway, and not far from their base in Avize, you’ll find the vines of Le Couchant – where the sun sets over lands northwest of Avize village. Here, due to the rolling hills and varied exposures, the grapes ripen and mature later than the rest of the village, and long hang-times make for a complex tapestry of orchard fruit flavors – pear, to green apple, and golden plums, with a fresh and piquant minerality that is reminiscent of saltwater taffy and Szechuan peppercorns. There is a taut and zippy stoniness to this wine, and it blossoms spectacularly in the glass as you sip!
While only their second offering under this new venture – the experience and careful precision of generations of grape-growing and winemaking is evident here… and we are excited to be committed in traveling along with this journey. The next stops are still a mystery, though we’re betting somewhere near their other holdings in Oger and Mesnil-sûr-Oger – but from there? We can’t wait to find out! This is a tremendous Blanc de Blancs bottling, and one we can’t wait to pop and pour!
