Why We Love It...

With an intense minerality and a waltz of citrus and stone fruits, this 2016 Extra Brut from the woman-run Côte des Bar powerhouse, Champagne Louise Brison, absolutely astounds! This small-production family grower is one that should be on your watch list immediately – and you’ll see exactly why after you get a taste of this 50% off beauty.

The Louise Brison vineyards are situated around the village of Noé-les-Mallets in the Côte des Bar. Planted to 30% chardonnay and 70% pinot noir, these vines are located amazingly close to Chablis, with similar soils of marl and kimmeridgian clay. Founded in 1910 by Louise Brison, the estate has passed hands from descendant to descendant until today, when Delphine, Louise’s great-granddaughter, helms the property. She has converted the estate to a certified organic and biodynamic property, focusing solely on vintage Champagnes that age at minimum five years on the lees.

Delphine is a devotee to maintaining the healthiest of vineyards, after training in the famed Simonit & Sirch method of gentle pruning, and works the soil mechanically. These folks are Vine Master Pruners (yes, that’s a real thing), and they consult around the globe with the very best vineyards from Champagne to Bordeaux, Napa, and beyond – all to train and maximize vine health in order to prevent disease and stress, and improve quality and flavors along the way.

Their A l’Aube de la Côte des Bar Extra Brut 2016 is exceptionally mineral-derived on the nose, with a bit of an iodine and ferrous note, along with some quince, pear, apple, and citrus. While the nose is a bit more subdued, the palate is powerfully complex, though with composure. Stone fruits, berries, and apples abound, along with a tart and biting blood orange character. It’s a true job well done, and we sincerely can’t get enough! For a hair over 50% off, this is absolutely magnificent and a celebratory ode to the women of the Champagne region, so raise a glass!

About the Producer

Champagne Louise Brison's journey reflects the broader evolution of the Aube, a region once considered secondary to the grander Marne. Historically sidelined by the grandes marques, the Aube has emerged as a vital source of distinct, terroir-driven champagnes. With its Kimmeridgian soils, particularly in the Côte des Bar, the Aube produces wines with striking minerality and character. Louise Brison is a perfect example of this transformation. Originally a modest family venture, the estate has evolved under the stewardship of Delphine Brison, who has embraced organic viticulture since 2011, achieving certification in 2017. Their champagnes, crafted from their 15 hectares, are a testament to the authenticity and individuality of the region, representing the essence of grower-bottled champagne from the Aube.
