Why We Love It...

Lamiable is a terrific, under-the-radar grower-producer from the eastern edge of the Vallée de la Marne, just below Bouzy. This cuvee from “the land of stars” is a stylish and racy offering of top-notch Champagne that sings at this price.

The Lamiable family settled in the Tours-sur-Marne region, along the eastern edge of the Montagne de Reims, way back in the 18th century. The family has always farmed the region, though it wasn’t until after World War II that the family turned to planting their own grapes. These wines from the family estate are extremely limited in production, so rare that they are not submitted to critics for review, and are nearly impossible to find in America. Only two other establishments in the U.S. have this available and they price it 25% higher! This is epiphany-level, grower Champagne that will be greatly appreciated by the illustrious few that get a chance to taste it.

Delicately fine bubbles deliver bright, zippy aromas of toasted hazelnuts and red florals and berries, plus strawberry tarts, and warming, spiced quince notes. The finish is rich and expressive, with a final kiss of Meyer lemon zest and a tingle of acidity. A classic blend of 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, based primarily on the 2014 vintage, with the final 40% provided by a continuous solera of reserve wine from prior years. A plump 7.8 grams per liter dosage puts this at the lower limits of Brut classification – with a resulting  balance of weight, verve, and ripeness. This is a rare steal of a find for spectacular Grand Cru grower Champagne that is virtually unknown here in the states. As Dom Perignon famously quipped… “Come quick, I am tasting the stars!”
