There, at the center of town, is the original winery of André Robert. Here, the fifth generation of the Robert family, Claire, alongside her partner, Jean-Baptiste Denizart, stands firmly at the helm. When the Last Bubbles team had the opportunity to visit the property, Jean-Baptiste personally toured us through their winery. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, exceptionally precise, and utterly, pervasively charming. He smiles constantly, even when accidentally revealing secrets – like the knowledge of what famous house buys their “leftover” wine that doesn’t pass muster into their own bottling. (He later swore us to secrecy on that count… but trust me, you’d know this house and may have even paid far more for their bottling made with bits of this that didn’t pass the Robert family’s muster).

Les Horizons is based on the 2018 vintage, with 20% of a 2017 reserve wine from the Premier Cru site of Cuis, just south of Epernay. The rest of the fruit hails from Étréchy and Vitry – also Premier Cru villages nearby – with the finishing touch (and signature André Robert style) being granted from the family holdings of some of the best plots of the hallowed Grand Cru site of Le Mesnil. After 10 months aging of the base wine in both vat and barrels, the wine spends just under three years in bottle on the lees before a judicious dosage of 2.5 grams/liter.

The Extra Brut offering perfectly harmonizes the opulence and weight of the oak barrel influence and ripe orchard fruits with the zip, crunch, and intensity of these chalky, cool sites. Expect an entry of toasted hazelnuts, with cardamom and Gala apples, followed up by lemon meringue, star anise, mandarin oranges, and an uplifting finish of chipped flint and Meyer lemon. Simply a delightfully complex, immensely pleasing Champagne that will easily compete with the larger house offerings at two or three times the price! We’re the only ones in the U.S. who have access to this – and while we don’t like to brag (usually) – this is certainly a wine to gloat about and to procure as much as you possibly can! We’ve grabbed the very last of what’s left with this latest disgorgement, and you simply can’t find a better Blanc de Blancs anywhere for less!

Champagne Palmer & Co. was founded in 1947, in the great rebuild of Reims that followed the devastation of World War II. It was a rare partnership between seven different grower families – with access to exceptional Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites across the Montagne de Reims – that became the birth of this new house. While each of the growers provided exceptional fruit – the folks at Palmer say that what sets them apart from others is their quintessential ingredient: time. Great fruit, carefully raised, with precision winemaking and careful blending – important facets all to making Palmer’s signature style of Champagne. But time is the great enhancer of their final product, and never rushed across this grand portfolio.

All wines produced in Champagne Palmer’s cool, chalk cellars in the heart of Reims will see at least three years of aging on the lees in bottle, and most far longer. This Amazone cuvée – the house’s best tête de cuvée – ages on the lees for over eight years, with up to four years aging of the still wine prior to that. This 95-point stunner blends juice from the 2009, 2010, and 2012 harvests, plus a significant dose of the house’s famous solera reserve that goes back decades. The fruit make-up is 51% Chardonnay, and then 49% Pinot Noir, with 18% of the Chardonnay coming from that perpetual solera reserve. The bottling’s final adjustment comes in the form of a Brut-level dosage of 6 grams per liter… et voilà – a masterpiece is born!

This is a rich, nutty, opulent Champagne loaded with Krug-esque secondary characteristics, and an unbelievably broad, weighty, and penetrating style. Layers upon layers of robust character that range from grilled pineapple, toasted hazelnuts, and buttery brioche, to spice-driven accents of nutmeg, mace, and cinnamon. There is a delightful core of stone and orchard fruits throughout – with yellow plums, and gala apples leading the way. This is a wine that evolves long after the bubbles have dissipated – so take our advice and pour this into a wide-mouthed Burgundy glass for optimal enjoyment. Less than two cases available, so live a little and make sure you jump fast to snag at least one of these haunting bottles. The legacy of the Hebrart name is long revered in the Marne Valley, and we’ve been huge fans for years. Noces de Craie translates to “wedding of chalk” – a nod to the minerally chalk and clay terroir where it’s grown and that lends a dusty mineral character to the finish. A full 36 months on the lees and malolactic fermentation keep this creamy, but the brightness of the fruit maintains an exciting liveliness. The finishing 4 grams per liter of dosage amplifies without masking the terroir, and keeps this as boisterous and profound as any young vintage of Marc Hebrart I’ve yet tasted! For one, she toyed with tying the vines instead of pruning to control green growth and reduce mildew conditions. She’d also been aging the base wines on the lees in tank for years because she didn't own a barrel until 2021. All of these little ways of tinkering and rethinking the traditional practices take loads more time and effort, but it’s paid off entirely in the wines, which have a charmingly modern style and distinct point of view.

Carole took over the family estate in 2017 from her father, Charles Haudot, who’d been making wines for nearly 40 years.
